The Art of Persian Rice

Have you ever eaten Persian rice? If no, please make a visit to the nearest Persian restaurant to taste the fragrant and fluffy of Persian rice. It is not like normal Malay style rice which we just simply put in rice cooker, turn the switch on and ting! done. It is specially cooked with art. There are 2 types of Persian rice. One is polow which I will show in this post and another one is kateh which is a simpler version. But the one which is delicious is polow. To get a super delish rice, of course it will involved a super complicated steps. I am showing a portion for 2 persons servings.

Ingredients:
~ 2 cups of basmathi rice (Persian rice better, but hard to find). Soak with water and 2 tbsp salt for at least 30 minutes
~ 1 large potato. This is for tahdig, a crunchy bottom of rice. You can substitute with bread or boiled spaghetti. If you like to get only rice tahdig, no need to put anything. But because my pot is large and if I didn't put potato, the amount of rice left is not enough for 2 persons.
~ Salt
~ Oil
~ 1/2 tsp Saffron dissolve in 2 tbsp warm water

Methods:
1. Boil some water, drain the soaked rice and pour in the boiling water with 2 tsp salt and 1 tbsp oil. After 7-8 minutes or when you see the rice expand in length and soft in the ends, drain the rice, rinse with cold water.

2. In same pot, pour some oil, place the sliced potatoes - medium heat.

3. Pour back the drained rice, make 3 hole with the back of spatula, pour half cup of water inside the holes.

4. When steam come out, lower the heat, cover with paper towels. This step is to avoid the dropping water from steaming process to drop back to the rice. Let it cook for about 50-60 minutes.
To serve, take some of rice and put into the saffron liquid. Decorate with your own creativity.

These are some of Persian rice I cooked.

Unfindable Gaps

It has been 4 months since I started my  intensive research for my phd. Apart from weekly meeting with Mr.supervisor, this semester I am attending research methodology class. One word that can make me vomit for hearing or seeing the spelling is "research gap". It is repeatedly being discussed in my everyday life. Wake up in the morning with a mission to find a gap. If failed, it will continue the next day until I find at least one! Hell ya, it's very stressful life because no phd without gap or gap is a phd. Whatever.

It's not an easy work. I need to read and read like reading monster. But still I haven't find any! The question is until when should I search for it? Are all phd candidates in this world have to have this in their research? Or only my faculty? It doesn't make sense. How many researchers in this world? How we can find a gap that hasn't been filled by other researcher? Can't I do something just empirical but interesting? I really don't understand why they have this kind of requirements.

Thinking of research and my progress really make me sick. I hate research! Hate!

Hates

1. A girl who is trying to steal other's boyfriend when actually she knew that he has a girlfriend. Worst case when that girl is a friend of the girlfriend. Who says hi everytime they met. Helloooo, do you know that you are doing a bitch job?

2. A man who flirts with other girls at back of his girlfriend. You know what, you think with your manners you deserve to have your girlfriend? In dream! Worst case when he is dating an elder woman. You are a gigolo son of bitch!

3. A person who play with religion. Whatever religion you are holding, it is not appropriate to show to people that you are not obidient to your religion. Worst case when he/she does not respecting his/her friend who are same religion as them.

Oh how i wish my life is all time beautiful, meeting and having only great people with characteristics that i like. No heart aching. No stress. But impossible. This is the colors of life. Only i wish that God will protect me from meeting people i listed above.

PG Art Cafe - A Review

PG stands for Pomegranate or Anar (in Persian). There is one pomegranate tree in the middle of the restaurant. This restaurant situated at Taman Universiti, Skudai, Johor.  It is attached to Uni Garden Hotel, next to Parsia Restaurant (I will review this restaurant later).

For me, it is the best Persian restaurant in the area (there are 4 Persian restaurants nearby up to date).

You can choose to sit indoor or outdoor (in gazebo).

Once you seated, they will give you a small glass of refreshing anar juice. I didn't snap photo.

Free Starter, naan with goat cheese and herbs, before this they served with olives also.

Nice presentation

My favorite is juje kabob ba ustukhun (chicken kebab).

Foods: Delicious! Tempting! Drooling!

If you are ordering kebabs, usually it takes minimum 15 minutes. I guess because they are using charcoal for grilling. Ambiance is very cosy with Persian music on air. But if you are coming at night, be patience of the music from nearby Chinese restaurant, really annoying karaoke. The only comment is the price. It is quite pricey but for a good kebab, it's ok for me. :)
